After finding out I need a Lamda sensor I trawled Ebay for the cheapest sensor. I ordered one for £17.99 with free P&P. The sensor arrived and I made a start at fitting it.

The 3.0L Six Cylinder X5 has two Lamda sensors fitted before the cat. These are fitted in the exhaust manifold one mounted at the front of the manifold and the 2nd towards the rear. The code related to sensor bank 1 which was the forward one.

I could see the sensor without undoing any of the engine covers. First I had to unplug the sensor. Best to try this when the engine is cold.
To reach the sensor you will need a Lamda sensor socket, this is a sensor with a cut out down the side to allow the sensor cable to pass though our just cut the cable off and use a normal socket.

A long extension was used and a small 3/8" bar to undo the sensor before lifting it out of the manifold.

After removing the protective cap from the new senser it was lowered into the exhaust manifold and tighten up. remembering to plug the new sensor in.

The fault code was cleared and the X5 was test driven again. The engine light remained off this time.
Cost £17.99
